Ceasefire possible tomorrow with 72-hour follow-up period

AFTER over two weeks of heavy clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border it is now possible that the two countries will declare and sign a ceasefire tomorrow (Dec. 27) with there to be a 72-hour monitoring period, Naewna newspaper and TV Channel 7 said this afternoon (Dec. 26).

The Cambodian delegation led by Maj. Gen. Nhem Boraden, deputy head of the Office of the Minister of Defence, attending the third and final day of the General Border Committee (GBC) secretariat-level meeting at Ban Phak Krad permanent border crossing in Chanthaburi province, had at around 1 p.m. today submitted the sixth revised version of the agreement to the Thai delegation led by Lt. Gen. Nattapong Praokaew, deputy chief of staff of the Thai armed forces, in his capacity as chairman of the Thai side of the GBC secretariat.

The details of the sixth amendment to the agreement have not yet been disclosed, pending approval by a meeting of the National Security Council chaired by Prime Minister-cum-Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul.

It is noteworthy that officials have prepared the venue for the signing ceremony between Thai Defence Minister Gen. Nattapol Nakphanit and Cambodian Defence Minister Gen. Tea Seiha tomorrow. The venue of the press conference will also likewise be moved.

It is likely that the ceasefire will commence tomorrow with a 72-hour monitoring period, following Cambodia’s earlier announcement of a ceasefire at the Asean Foreign Ministers meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Monday Dec. 22.

This GBC meeting is being observed by the Asean Observer Team (AOT) from Malaysia stationed in Thailand with the Khmer team also bringing along the AOT team stationed in Cambodia to attend today’s meeting.
