By Thai Newsroom Reporters

A DOZEN DESIGNATED People’s MPs including party leader Nattapong Ruengpanyawut were today (Feb.9) retroactively charged with breaching the lese majeste law by the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

The anti-graft agency’s resolution unanimously adopted only a day after the general election had been held on Sunday was to take retroactive, legal action against several designated MPs of the reformist party who were elected either in constituency-based mode or party-listed mode among a total of 44 former reformist lawmakers on charges of proposing en masse legislation to amend the draconian lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Code, in manners alleged to be “detrimental” to the monarchy.

Those designated People’s MPs facing the latest legal battle together include Sirikanya Tansakun, Rangsiman Rome, Pakornwut Udompipatsakul and Nattapong, who unsuccessfully contested for prime minister, among others.

Also found guilty of the same lese majeste charges alongside those 44 ex-MPs of the reformist camp was ex-Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat who has been already banned from assuming political positions at any levels for a 10-year period whilst the Move Forward were dissolved by the Constitutional Court on similar charges.

Those designated MPs will be immediately prohibited by law from performing their legislative duties if the Supreme Court takes into account the lese majeste lawsuit to be filed against them by the NACC within a 30-day time from today.
