Underground internet cables linked to scam gangs in Myawaddy found

A RAID on a company located at Mae Sot’s cargo port found underground internet cables feeding signals to scam gangs across the Moei river in Myanmar’s Myawaddy township, Amarin TV said today (Mar. 6).

Armed with a search warrant issued by Mae Sot provincial court, Pol. Lt. Col. Trin Leelanuch, head of Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau’s Technology Crime Support Division, Mr. Suthira Phungtham, director of National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission’s Telecommunications Regulatory Bureau, Mae Sot district officials, and True Corporation Plc staff inspected the suspected company.

They used an excavator to dig the cargo port and eventually found the underground cables running from the Thai bank of the river to the Myanmar bank, where tall buildings belonging to scam bosses who rely on internet signals from Thailand to run their online call centres and other scam operations are located. These transmission lines can transmit internet signals over a distance of 1.6 kilometres.

The team, which worked from early in the morning till evening, also successfully traced the cables back to the office where computers and transmission equipment were kept. Legal action will be taken against the owner of the river port.
