PM denies 400 billion baht loaned funding for people partly destined for irrelevant projects

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

PRIME MINISTER Anutin Charnvirakul today (May 7) categorically denied that the Bhumjaithai-led government’s 400 billion baht loaned funding scheme for the impoverished people might probably be destined in part for any irrelevant government projects whilst he himself will see to it that the money will be by no means funnelled off or embezzled by any government agency.

The prime minister reassured that all the 400 billion baht loaned funding package prepared under an executive decree will be entirely and directly handed out to the people adversely affected by economic slumps throughout the country though the opposition bloc may shortly file a petition for the Constitutional Court to pass a ruling whether it be deemed constitutional in regard to the people’s sustained economic hardships and the government’s economic salvage measures.

Anutin confirmed that he has already signed the executive decree and forwarded it to the Monarch for formal approval and that the sought-after borrowed money which is yet be only secured in the baht denomination will be effectively spent up under the government’s design to stimulate and increase domestic consumption throughout the country in similar manners as implemented by previous governments over the last several years.

“Of course, I will see to it that every baht and satang of the loan will be disbursed in the optimum interests of the people and that no embezzlement and no misconduct will occur over it,” said the prime minister who concurrently performs as interior minister and leader of the Bhumjaithai, core of the current coalition government.

Without elaborating, Anutin was apparently referring to the much-heralded Copay Plus and state welfare cards projects for which the 400 billion baht borrowed funding will be primarily provided.

The prime minister made his comments in response to the criticism that a large portion of the loan money could probably be allocated to some populist projects designed by the Bhumjaithai-led government which may not be considered as emergency-driven or relevant to any government measures to address an economic or financial crisis.

Without naming names, the prime minister contended that the current government would probably be the eighth one to borrow money to solve the people’s economic hardships since preceding governments including a previous one led by the Democrats had done so over the last few decades.

As part of the opposition bloc, the Democrats will likely join the People’s in a concerted effort to thwart passage of the Bhumjaithai-led government’s executive decree for the 400 billion baht loan package at parliament following a planned petition for the Constitutional Court to pass a ruling on the questionable constitutionality of the bill.

An executive decree may be issued in times of economic or financial crises or natural disasters and can be implemented by the executive branch for an unspecified period of time before it is deliberated by the legislative branch and passes a retroactive approval at a later date whilst legislation cannot be implemented until it has passed approval at parliament in the first place.
