TORRENTIAL rain pounded Bangkok this Sunday afternoon (May 31) leading to localised flooding and damage to road surface during peak traffic hours, Naewna newspaper said.
Relevant agencies said floodwaters streamed onto Phaya Thai road from the floodgates beneath the BTS station causing significant traffic snarl-ups.
Pathum Wan District Office quickly mobilised personnel from Public Works (BEST unit), Sanitation and Parks departments plus Municipal Police to closely monitor the situation. They also coordinated with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Drainage Department to quickly drain out water from canals and other drainage systems to mitigate the impact on the public.
Furthermore, personnel were deployed to monitor the situation 24 hours a day to provide timely assistance and resolve any problems.
The Bangkok Flood Prevention Centre said at 3.30 p.m. that light to moderate rainfall was continuing in some areas, particularly in Thung Khru district, upper Thonburi zone, and extending to the Bangkok side. The rain clouds were moving westward and were expected to stabilise soon.
The highest accumulated rainfall recorded was Pathumwan district reaching 88.0 millimetres resulting in temporary flooding in several areas. Authorities are urgently draining out floodwaters.
