3 US Navy Carrier Strike Group ships heading for Thailand for a short visit

THE Thai Navy confirmed that three ships from a US Navy’s Carrier Strike Group are scheduled to make a short stop in eastern Thailand while an American newspaper reported that USS Abraham Lincoln is heading to visit Thailand early September after an extended mission in the Middle East, PPTVHD36 said today (Aug. 25).

RADM Parach Rattanachaiyapan, the Thai Navy’s spokesperson, said that the short stop in eastern Thailand by the three ships from the US Navy’s Carrier Strike Group is a routine port visit and not linked to the situation of any particular country.

The visit is to allow the crews to enjoy rest and recreation (R&R), as well as to receive necessary logistical support and services. This is in accordance with the ongoing defence cooperation agreements between Thailand and the United States.

The Thai Navy is withholding details of the ship names, anchorage locations, and detailed schedules due to security concerns.

USA Today cited messages from crew members to family members indicating that the USS Abraham Lincoln is scheduled to stop in Thailand while returning to the United States after completing its record-breakingly long mission that lasted over 250 days.

However, the US Navy has not officially confirmed this schedule.

A US Navy spokesperson told USA Today that, in accordance with operational security principles, the US Navy will not comment on future missions or the movements of warships in advance.

One piece of evidence obtained by USA Today is a message sent on Aug. 18 in which a female crew member on board the USS Abraham Lincoln asked relatives for a list of interesting hotels in Thailand.

In another message, received around the same time, a relative told her family member she was excited for him as he had always talked about going to Thailand.

If this scheduled stop goes through, it would be a crucial port call for the crew, who have spent approximately 250 days at sea with virtually no opportunity to disembark.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has become a political issue in the United States after Democratic members of Congress, as well as the families of the crew, expressed concerns about the living conditions of the crew.

One of the key concerns is the mental health of the crew, including reports of one crew member jumping overboard. Families have also been told of various problems on board, such as cold shower water, clogged toilets, and insufficient supplies of certain items.

Furthermore, many families are dissatisfied with the lack of a clear timeline for when the crew will be able to return home.

The reported stop in Thailand in early September could therefore be the first opportunity in several months for the USS Abraham Lincoln crew to disembark after a long and continuous mission at sea, however, official confirmation from the US Navy is still pending.
