8 die as trailer-truck slams into SUV on Motorway

 

EIGHT people, including three children, died after a trailer-truck slammed into their SUV that was parked at a temporary rest stop on the Motorway late last night (Apr. 24) with another trailer-truck parked there also damaged, Naewna newspaper said this morning.

At 10.35 p.m. On Nut Highway Police were alerted of this accident involving two trailer-trucks and a SUV at kilometre 23 +4000 heading to Chonburi and quickly went there with rescue workers and volunteers from Ruamkatanya Foundation.

At the scene of the accident, the leftmost lane of the temporary rest stop, they found that a trailer-truck that had been carrying asphalt but now empty had crashed into the white SUV, completely crushing it. Eight people were found dead within, and rescuers had to use several sets of cutting equipment to pry open the wreckage and remove the bodies of the deceased – two young girls, a boy, four adult females and an adult male who was the driver.

Two other women were injured after being thrown from the SUV and were quickly taken to Chularat 9 Hospital as was the driver of the trailer-truck that smashed into the vehicle, identified as Mr. Saneh (surname withheld), 62.

In addition, another trailer-truck, loaded with crude oil and also parked there got damaged at the rear. Mr. Kwangkaew, 51, the driver, said he came from Chumphon and was heading to deliver the cargo at Kabinburi and stopped to rest there. Not long afterwards he heard a loud noise and found that a car had hit him from the back. He added that when he parked, he did not see the SUV having also stopped behind him.

Police said they will be checking Saneh’s alcohol level and questioning him further about the cause of the accident.

Pol. Col. Kukkong Disawat, commander of the Highway Police Division 8, said initial investigation revealed that there were 10 passengers in the SUV and they were heading from Bangkok to visit relatives in Rayong. The driver had pulled over to let some of the passengers get diapers for the children travelling with them. Just then the trailer-truck crashed into their vehicle with great force resulting in a large number of deaths.
