Corrections Department not halting Thaksin’s parole as petitioned

THE Department of Corrections clarified today (May 9) that the release of de facto Pheu Thai boss/inmate Thaksin Shinawatra on parole on Monday (May 11) is in keeping with parole laws after the Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand (NSPRT) had submitted a letter to Justice Minister Rutthaphon Naowarat to halt it , Amarin TV and TV Channel 7 said today (May 9).

The department said NSPRT has cited erroneous legal arguments and distorted the Supreme Court ruling in Thaksin’s case with one being a claim that he was involved in an unlawful sentencing process or committed disciplinary offences while incarcerated. In fact the subcommittee that considered his parole eligibility had not found that he had committed any disciplinary or criminal offences while in custody.

The subcommittee therefore decided Thaksin met the qualifications according to the Corrections Act B.E. 2560 (2017), the Ministerial Regulation on the Benefits of Convicted Prisoners B.E. 2562 (2019) and its amendments (No. 2) B.E. 2564 (2021).

The Department of Corrections confirmed that this parole consideration was not intended to benefit any specific individual, but rather was conducted under the same standards for all inmates nationwide, strictly adhering to factual evidence and the relevant laws.
