BHUMJAITHAI threatened to take legal action against those spreading fake news that the Land Bridge scheme is hiding a casino project with the rumours stemming from an old draft bill which was rejected two years ago, Amarin TV said this evening (May 8).
Mr. Natchanon Sikorkuea, Bhumjaithai’s spokesperson, said the claim that a 99-year land lease is being obtained to build a casino in the Southern Economic Corridor, with the Land Bridge being at the heart of this megaproject, distorts the truth and is an attack on the scheme.
This claim is based on an old draft bill proposed by Mr. Nopadol Kaewsupat, an MP of Thai Local Power Party, who tabled it to the House of Representatives and it was rejected two years ago.
Bhumjaithai’s Southern Economic Corridor draft bill uses the Eastern Economic Corridor Act B.E. 2561 (2018) as a model but adapts it to the context, area, and potential of the South, while not including provisions for a casino.
Prime Minister/Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has already set up a committee to study the Land Bridge project. If the study concludes that it is not cost-effective and the people in the area do not want it, the project will not proceed.
“We will exercise our legal rights if anyone continues to slander or falsely accuse the Bhumjaithai Party, causing misunderstanding and damaging the party’s reputation,” Natchanon said.
