PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit today (April 28) insisted on social media that Chiang Mai City voters pick a People’s contestant against an archrival from the Pheu Thai for mayor of the northern city in the next couple of weeks.
Thanathorn, former leader of the court-dissolved Future Forward, posted on his Facebook page to call on the Chiang Mai City constituents to vote for People’s candidate Theerawut Kaeofong for city mayor in the election scheduled for May 11.
The Progressive Movement leader’s latest move online apparently followed the expressed confidence of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s father/de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra of an electoral victory for Pheu Thai contestant Asani Buranupakorn in the mayoral race.
Chiang Mai used to be viewed as the biggest Pheu Thai stronghold in general elections over the last couple of decades but Thaksin’s party was largely defeated by the court-dissolved Move Forward in the 2023 election for MPs.
Out of a total 10 MP seats of Chiang Mai, the reformist Move Forward, practically rebranded as the People’s, the biggest party in the opposition bloc at parliament, won seven seats, leaving only two seats to the neo-conservative Pheu Thai, core of the current coalition government, and one other to the military-installed Palang Pracharath.
Last February, the People’s scored an electoral triumph for head of the provincial administration of Lampoon, another northern province adjacent to Chiang Mai, defeating Thaksin’s camp.
Viradej Poopisit running under the People’s banners won the Nayok Or Bor Jor seat of Lampoon over Anusorn Wongwan vying under the Pheu Thai tickets. Anusorn is not only a former Nayok Or Bor Jor of the northern province but a former member of cabinet in previous governments.
