OVER 60,000 households in Ayutthaya are suffering terribly from severe floods as parts of this province adjacent to Bangkok have been inundated for over three months leading to 15 deaths with many victims now camping at roads along with their animals, Amarin TV said this morning (Nov. 14).
The Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat province continues to discharge water downstream at a rate of 2,900 metres a second with this resulting in high water levels in both Chao Phraya and Noi rivers affecting both people and animals. It is now difficult for cattle to find grass to graze.
Altogether 11 districts, 143 sub-districts, and 947 villages are under water with 62,348 households in Sena, Phak Hai, Bang Ban, Bang Sai, and Ayutthaya districts affected.
Reporters of this TV channel visited Village No. 8, Nam Tao subdistrict, Bang Ban district, where flooding has continued for more than three months. Residents’ homes are submerged, as well as cattle and buffalo pens. People and animals have been forced to live at roadside shelters for months. The rising floodwaters have also inundated grass in rice fields with cattle unable to graze there as they usually do.
Mr. Paiboon Yingchit, a 74-year-old cattleman, revealed that he currently only releases his buffaloes to graze at the edge of the road where there is just a little grass because the rice fields below are completely flooded. He has dry straw, but they don’t eat it often, affecting their diet. He also has to keep close watch at night.
The flooding here has lingered for three months, making it difficult for local residents. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated, he said, adding other cattlemen in this province had helped him by giving medicine and vaccines.
