By TV Channel 7 and Thai Newsroom

THAILAND’S Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow arrived in India last night (Nov. 29) for a two-day visit during which he will inform New Delhi about the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border and the reasons for suspending the Thai-Cambodian Peace Declaration.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who welcomed Sihasak upon his arrival, said the visit is an occasion to strengthen strategic partnership and enduring civilisation ties. The Thai minister will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for bilateral discussions tomorrow.

Sihasak said he will tell India that Cambodia has to take responsibility for the seventh Thai soldier to lose a leg in a landmine blast on Nov. 10 before any bilateral discussions could proceed.

He will also mention Thailand’s proposal that the Ottawa Treaty parties establish an independent fact-finding committee to conduct on-site visits to prevent Cambodia from distorting information.

Sihasak reiterated his concern over the latest landmine blast and urged Cambodia to cooperate with Thailand on demining and demarcating the border areas where encroachment has occurred. If progress is achieved compliance with the agreement would resume.

India and Thailand have historically enjoyed warm and cordial relations. In contemporary times, diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1947, and both sides celebrated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in 2022.
