THE PEOPLE’s, the second largest elected party in Sunday’s election, today (Feb.10) called for the recounting of votes in 10 constituencies amidst allegations of electoral rigging and irregularities.
Given complaints of electoral rigging and irregularities filed by people in those constituencies and elsewhere in the provinces, the reformist camp insisted that electoral victories and defeats may be eventually accepted but such alleged malfeasance on the part of certain biased officials and any rigging suspects cannot be tolerated by law-abiding parties and that the nationwide election should have been held in transparent, impartial fashion.
The People’s called on the Election Commission to manage to have all the votes cast in those constituencies recounted very shortly to assure of evident transparency and justice.
The 10 constituencies where the People’s contestants had been defeated and where the recounting of votes was strongly demanded are located in the northeastern provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen and Maha Sarakham, the northern province of Lampang, the central provinces of Chainart, Samut Prakarn and Saraburi, the eastern province of Chonburi, the western province of Tak and the southern province of Surat Thani.
Similar electoral rigging and irregularities could probably be found in many other constituencies whilst the polling agency has been pressed to see to it that no such misconduct be tolerated anywhere.
In some cases of alleged electoral rigging, the total of voting ballots which had been formally pronounced as “good ballots” evidently contradicted the total of votes reportedly won by the contestants vying in constituency-based mode whilst many “good ballots” had been allegedly pronounced as “invalid ballots” at some voting units.
So far, the polling agency has been petitioned to look into more than 110 cases of electoral rigging and irregularities in all regions of the country where the Bhumjaithai, currently core of the caretaker government under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, came out as the largest elected party grabbing 174 out of a total 400 constituency-based MP seats – the most among all contesting parties.
