Gunman holding students, teachers hostage surrenders

A GUNMAN who took students and teachers hostage at a prestigious school in Hat Yai has surrendered with the principal he shot later dying in the hospital, Amarin TV said this evening (Feb. 11).

At approximately 4.45 p.m. the gunman, who is a former student around 16 to 17 years old, opened fire within Patong Prathankiriwat School in Hat Yai district, Songkhla province, and took students and teachers hostage.

Police and related agencies urgently rushed there to control the situation.

He later released some hostages with one of them, a ninth grade female student, saying he was still holding three hostages, the female principal and two students.

She added that the gunman was targeting a certain teacher, not students. As he opened fire in her classroom she got very frightened, but he then started releasing hostages, one or two at a time, and she was released with a teacher.

The gunman, who was armed with a rifle containing approximately 16-17 rounds, announced that he would shoot the hostages randomly unless this teacher arrived within 30 minutes.

This led to the principal being shot first and it was reported that she later died in the hospital.

Later this evening this gunman surrendered to the authorities.
