POLICE are investigating possible arson in a big fire that completely destroyed eight fishing boats last night in Nakhon Si Thammarat causing over 10 million baht damage, Amarin TV said this morning (March 20).
At around 1 a.m. Pol. Lt. Athorn Thongnak, deputy investigator at Khanom police station in this southern province, was alerted of several fishing boats having caught fire at the Ban Pa Len pier and quickly rushed there with the station’s superintendent Pol. Col. Kittipong Thepnu after dispatching several fire trucks from various agencies with rescuers also joining them.
Upon arriving at the scene, they found that more than 10 fishing boats were engulfed in flames at the pier. Firemen struggled to put out the blaze amid strong winds and took four hours to do so. Eight fishing boats were completely destroyed in the blaze with damage exceeding 10 million baht.
While police initially suspected short-circuit as sparking the fire, they are also looking into the possibility of arson with a police forensic team to conduct a thorough investigation. Although the exact origin of the blaze is not yet known, eyewitnesses said the mooring rope of one of the burning boats snapped causing it to collide with nearby vessels thus spreading the blaze.
