DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER-cum-Commerce Minister Supajee Suthumpun today (April 1) shrugged off what she called a “nonsensical” ridicule over her having graduated a master’s degree from a little-known, private university in the United States, saying many other famous Thais did so as well.
Supajee told reporters that she graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from Northrop University, a corporate campus built by Northrop Aircraft Corp, one of major US aviation and aircraft manufacturers.
Northrop University on West Arbor Vitae street in Inglewood, California which opened in 1945 and closed in 1991 focused on subjects of aviation, engineering and computing rather than relatively minor courses such as business administration. But Supajee proudly said she actually had been there and done that though members of Thai society may have found it unlikely a place for her to advance her studies abroad.
Neither will she take legal action against any of her critics who may have been attracted to such “nonsensical” mockery and even humiliated her in regard to her having graduated from the now-closed, streetside campus.
The deputy prime minister-cum-commerce minister admitted she had not declared her educational background as part of her personal vitae whilst she accepted the naming of her as commerce minister by a caretaker government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul last September.
Supajee who graduated a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Thammasat University before she advanced her studies at the US aviation firm’s university said she had successfully run corporate businesses in Thailand and peaked in her business career as CEO of Dusit Thani International until she became part of the caretaker government.
Now her ability and integrity as commerce minister are being widely questioned by members of the public in the wake of oil price hikes and subsequent surges in the prices of varied merchandise.
