THE Thai army tightened security at Chong Chom border crossing in Surin province after provocation by Cambodian soldiers with armoured personnel carriers deployed to control the area, Naewna and Amarin TV said this evening (April 2).
ACM Praphas Sonjaidee, the Thai air force’s assistant commander-in-chief and director of the Joint Information Centre for the Thai-Cambodian Situation, said an investigation of the heightened tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border revealed the followed:
1/ Cambodian soldiers approached the barbed wire fence inappropriately and engaged in disruptive behaviour towards Thai personnel. This necessitated troop adjustments and the deployment of M113 armoured personnel carriers to control the area, maintain security, and prevent the situation from worsening.
The Suranaree Task Force had said that armed Cambodian soldiers had last night (April 1) and this morning (April 2 ) behaved in an unruly manner near Thai positions.
2/ The actions taken were strictly in accordance with Article 2 of the Joint Statement (dated Dec. 27, 2025), adhering to the principle of deploying forces along the defined lines and avoiding provocation.
3/ Regarding coordination, Thailand maintains that there should be advance notification when Asean Observers Team (AOT) visits the area through agreed-upon mechanisms such as Regional Border Committee or Joint Boundary Committee to ensure transparency and mutual understanding. However, Thailand continues to support AOT’s role in monitoring and promoting de-escalation as outlined in the Joint Statement.
4/ Thailand reiterates its position that all actions taken have been professional, patient, and strictly in accordance with the Joint Statement by avoiding provocation, not intensifying the situation and focusing on building mutual trust.
“We request cooperation from all sectors to avoid disseminating inaccurate or unconfirmed information.
“This could affect the atmosphere of cooperation between the two countries,” ACM Praphas said.
He also confirmed that the AOT delegation did not enter areas controlled by Thailand and the overall situation remains under control, and there has been no further heightening of tensions.
