Residents at Wong Wian Yai evacuated after road subsides

SEVERAL residents living along Prachathipok road leading to Wong Wian Yai roundabout were evacuated today (July 9) after some sections developed cracks and subsided following last night’s flooding of the under-construction Southern Purple Line subway tunnel, PPTVHD36 and TV Channel 7 said this evening.

Mr. Theerapat Khachamat, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said after inspecting this road that he has ordered the crisis response team to install two building collapse monitoring sensors (Rescue Guardians) there with these devices measuring the degree of building tilt.

The monitoring is done via a camera control system, and an alarm will sound immediately if the building moves. The Rescue Guardian sensors were installed within a 30-metre radius of the cracks. The crisis team is closely monitoring the situation with engineers from the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR Thailand) team also participating in the operation to ensure compliance with structural engineering standards.

This department together with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and Mass Transit Authority of Thailand has been monitoring the situation in the area surrounding the road collapse site, particularly Prachathipok road from Ban Khaek intersection to Wong Wian Yai which has subsided by 20 centimetres.

Residents and businesses near the cracked road have been told to evacuate and move their belongings out of the area to prevent potential risks and they have gradually started doing so.

Later officials of this department said the installed sensors had detected that a dental clinic abutting the section of the cracked road had tilted by 10 degrees toward the road.

The clinic owner said he has moved his equipment to a warehouse in Bang Na and is losing over 400,000 baht due to postponement of several dental implant appointments. It is uncertain when the clinic could reopen at this building as experts are assessing the structure.

While the cracks in this building have been present for some time, after road subsidence they appear to have expanded by 2-3 centimetres.
