CAREFUL repairs of the under-construction Southern Purple Line subway tunnel at Wong Wian Yai roundabout that got flooded last Thursday (July 9) has helped stop subsidence of Prachathipok road, TV Channel 7 said today (July 15).
As this road has been closed during the repairs and traffic rerouted to Lad Ya road there is currently bad traffic congestion in the area.
Deputy Transport Minister Siriphong Angkasakulkiat said after inspecting the repairs with his team and Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) Acting Deputy Governor Mr. Kitti Akewanlop, who is in charge of this project, that overall, the situation is improving.
The contractor has continuously carried out grouting to a depth of 37 metres to stop groundwater seeping into the tunnel.
Moreover, monitoring of structures within 30-metre radius showed no significant building movement.
The contractor’s next step is to maintain water level within the tunnel to ensure there is balanced water pressure inside out the underground structure.
In undertaking these repairs MRTA and the contractor have consulted tunnel engineering and underground construction experts to assess the situation and work out a solution.
This includes considering the feasibility of safely reopening the road to traffic as soon as possible, prioritising engineering principles and safety, as instructed by Prime Minister/Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Prime Minister/Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn.
