AN earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 14km, jolted Myanmar at 8.26 a.m. this morning (July 17), 321 kilometres from the Mae Hong Son border.
The Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Meteorological Department confirmed there was no impact on Thailand.
A powerful earthquake with the mainshock measuring a magnitude 7.7–7.9 that struck central Myanmar near Mandalay city on March 28, 2025 caused thousands of deaths and widespread destruction with the State Audit Building in Bangkok also collapsing.
Earthquake intensity levels, according to the Mercalli scale, are assessed by the sensation and damage to objects. There are 12 levels commonly used, according to the Knowledge Centre of Natural Resources and Environment, Institute for Sustainable Development of Natural Resources and Environment, citing the Department of Mineral Resources
They are as follows:
Intensity level I Not felt. People will not feel it, but the instrument can detect it.
Intensity level II Very mild. People with sensitive feelings may feel a slight earthquake.
Intensity level III Very mild. People who are still will feel the ground shaking.
Intensity level IV Mild. Most people feel it.
Intensity level V Moderate. People who are sleeping are startled.
Intensity level VI Severe. Trees shake. Houses sway. Some buildings collapse.
Intensity level VII Very severe. Walls separate, crack, ceiling tiles fall.
Intensity level VIII Destroy. Buildings crack. Must stop driving.
Intensity level IX Destroy. Houses collapse along the cracks in the earth. Water pipes break in sections.
Intensity level X Destroy. Landslide. Strong buildings collapse. Railway tracks bend. Soil slopes move or collapse.
Severity Level XI Destruction. Buildings collapse, bridges break, railways, water pipes and underground power lines are damaged, landslides, floods
Severity Level XII Destruction. Everything on the ground in that area is completely damaged, the ground moves in waves
