THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court today (Sep.28) ruled the general election for MPs held earlier this year was deemed constitutional and legitimate as opposed to being otherwise declared null and void as many people may have more or less anticipated.
The Constitutional Court judges resolved to declare as constitutional and legitimate the Feb.8 nationwide race to the House of Representatives which saw the ultra-conservative Bhumjaithai navigated by de facto party boss Newin Chidchob scoring a landslide victory, warranting the naming of party leader Anutin Charnvirakul as head of a post-election government given support from 291 coalition MPs.
Today’s judgment of the Constitutional Court was delivered in response to petitions which had earlier alleged the election of being literally unconstitutional and insisted in vain that it be declared null and void primarily due to the unprecedented existence of a barcode and QR code on the voting ballots, which could have allegedly compromised the voters’ secrecy.
Nonetheless, the court passed the historic ruling to the extent that the puzzling barcode and QR code on those ballots used by the Election Commission did by no means compromise the voters’ suffrage rights and electoral freedom.
If the court had ruled otherwise, all MPs and members of cabinet would have immediately lost their legislative and executive statuses whilst another general election would have been held in a few-months time.
