THE target of the current police crackdown on mule account holders which has led to some innocent people being trapped should be lawyers and accountants who are helping Chinese grey capitalists open thousands of companies for money laundering, Naewna newspaper quoted “Drama-addict” Facebook page as saying today (Sep. 16).
A bank employee told the operator of this page that corporate-level mule accounts have become an increasingly serious problem.
This employee related an incident whereby a seemingly innocent person who clearly looked like an executive or director of a company came to open a bank account.
However upon going through the papers the employee spotted something fishy so persuaded him to not apply for one, warning him that opening a mule account was illegal, and he left the bank.
A little later this man came back with his lawyer who threatened to sue the bank unless they opened an account for him and they had no choice but to do so.
This sort of incident occurs frequently, this Facebook page said, adding that earlier this year police raided a law and accountant company for colluding with Chinese grey-capitalist gangs in setting up hundreds of companies that had opened a huge number of bank accounts they used as their financial channels.
This Facebook page had a few days earlier claimed that there were 50 companies operating under the same roof, with a total of 150 registered in three separate houses, and the directors were swapped around.
These are the people who are helping scam gangs launder money and a crackdown that focuses on brokers who recruit ordinary people to open mule accounts is not enough with the top brass being lawyers and accountants operating from their own companies.
