SEVERAL kilometres of Jomtien Beach in Pattaya was littered with marine debris that washed ashore today (Feb. 22) leading to fearful tourists avoiding swimming in the sea while Pattaya City urgently sent officials to clean up the mess, MNG Online and TV Channel 7 said.
Some reporters went to this beach and saw various types of ocean trash scattered on the sand including pieces of wood, logs, plastic bottles, styrofoam boxes, and dangerous materials like nails, which could harm tourists strolling through or swimming. As a result, most tourists chose to walk along the beach instead of swimming.
The overall atmosphere today was noticeably quieter than usual, despite it being a Sunday, a day when large numbers of both Thai and foreign tourists visit the popular seaside town.
Meanwhile, a beach chair and umbrella rental operator said the phenomenon of waves washing up massive amounts of trash ashore occurs regularly every year during periods of strong winds and high waves. The trash is swept in from the open sea, causing tourists to hesitate to swim due to fear of injury from dangerous debris mixed in the water.
However, Pattaya City has ordered officials to clean up the trash, especially large pieces of wood and dangerous materials that could obstruct and endanger tourists. The trash was piled up on the beach awaiting removal. The operation took approximately four hours to complete.
