Sai Mai residents worried northern runoff will worsen their plight

WITH Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) warning that northern runoff coinciding with high tides from today to Sunday (Sep. 29-Oct. 4) could bring a new wave of floods to riverside communities outside flood embankments and low-lying areas, residents of Ua-Athon Phoem Sin flats in Sai Mai district are among those worried that additional incoming floodwaters will exacerbate their plight, TV Channel 7 and Naewna newspaper said this evening.

The possible new round of floods, with the northern runoff causing river levels to rise, is driven by a relatively strong southwesterly monsoon prevailing over the Andaman sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand, resulting in stronger winds and waves.

BMA said ateas of particular concern are the following:

– Communities outside flood embankments;

– Areas lacking permanent flood protection barriers;

– Low-lying areas and riverside zones.

Traffic routes that should be monitored are the following:

– Sukhumvit road;

– Suksawat road;

– Rama II road.

Meanwhile a TV Channel 7 news team visited Ua-Athon Phoem Sin estate, comprising 87 residential buildings, following complaints  that stagnant floodwaters remain on access roads ranging from 30 to 50cm, with some spots reaching 70cm to one metre.

A major source of distress is that, despite the sun coming out today, floodwaters have barely receded. Residents are deeply concerned that runoff from the north could flow into the Central region within the next day or two, compounding their misery.

Most residents are low-income earners living hand-to-mouth; if floodwaters rise further, they will be unable to commute to work, resulting in loss of income.

Furthermore, if the situation escalates, large vehicles might be required just to travel out for food and essential supplies. Consequently, residents want the accumulated floodwaters drained from the area before the northern runoff arrives. Many are stressed and unable to sleep, worrying about their vehicles, property, and personal safety.
